GOP defense hawks teed off on Pentagon leaders Tuesday after the Defense Department unilaterally sought to remake part of its policy shop — a move that could imperil the path forward for a key nominee.
The Senate Armed Services Committee was told about the changes just before Tuesday's confirmation hearing for Austin Dahmer, who was tapped to serve as assistant secretary of defense for strategy, plans and capabilities.
Among other things, the Pentagon plans to change Dahmer’s title and tweak his areas of responsibility, according to two people with knowledge of a memo sent to Congress. That isn’t sitting well with senators.
