Direct File doubles its territory

The Treasury Department announced today that its free tax filing system would expand to another 12 states, bringing the total number to 24 states for the upcoming tax season.

Direct File, piloted in the 2024 tax season, will now be available in states representing about 62% of the U.S. population. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement the expansion had “the potential to save Americans tens of millions of dollars in filing fees in the upcoming filing season.”
