Late Friday, Trump banned the government from using Anthropic. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also labeled the Claude-maker a supply chain risk in a way that seeks to limit its ability to partner with other government contractors.
In response, OpenAI secured a Pentagon contract with similar restrictions on its use for surveilling Americans or autonomous lethal weapons that Anthropic was pushing. But the administration says the key difference is the new deal gives OpenAI CEO Sam Altman less discretion in deciding if a violation has occurred than Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wanted.
So what’s next? Anthropic put out a statement referring to particular laws it thinks Trump and Hegseth are violating. That’s a pretty strong signal that a lawsuit is possible.
