Democrats slam use of export controls in trade talks

House Democrats criticized the Trump administration Thursday for using export controls in its trade negotiations with China.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.) told the administration’s official in charge of export controls that those restrictions should be based on national security, not trade agreements.

Administration officials have indicated that export controls were on the table in the negotiations with Chinese officials in London this week. That’s of particular concern for China hawks who want to limit Beijing’s access to technology used to power artificial intelligence.
