Lutnick said administration can sidestep Congress on AI

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told a new artificial intelligence industry association on Wednesday night that the Trump administration can address key AI policy concerns on its own if Congress doesn’t act.

The speech, which was described to us by multiple people in the room, occurred as news emerged that the White House is considering an executive order to empower the Justice Department to sue states that regulate AI.

Lutnick said that the administration doesn’t need Congress to address AI, multiple attendees told us.

President Donald Trump is also backing an effort from House Republican leaders to include legislation in the annual defense policy bill that would block states from regulating the AI industry. But that effort faces many challenges.
