Speaker Kevin McCarthy

This is the moment Speaker Kevin McCarthy desperately wanted to avoid — yet it’s the one Washington knew would come.

Around 1:30 p.m., the Republican leadership will call up the motion to vacate — offered by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) — for a vote.

There will likely be two votes. The first will be a motion to table the Gaetz resolution. If that fails, then the House will vote on whether to vacate the speaker’s office.
