Health care costs are set to spike in Maine next year, creating an acute political problem for Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).
Mainers who get health insurance on the individual Obamacare marketplace will see premiums rise by an average of 24% in 2026, the Maine Bureau of Insurance announced. Premiums will increase by an average of nearly 18% for the small employer market.
That’s partly thanks to the looming expiration at year’s end of enhanced tax credits for Obamacare plans, per a Maine official. The surging costs in Maine underscore that vulnerable Republicans are going to feel the heat fast from the expiring subsidies, with open enrollment for 2026 plans beginning Nov. 1.
