  • Lead Engineer

    Washington, D.C. or Remote; East Coast hours required

    Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works, in addition to providing our audience with the government affairs software and services they need for their day-to-day work. We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, dozens of events and more. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol — and that’s the center of our focus.

     

    Our audience includes members of Congress, high-ranking officials in the Biden administration, lobbyists, top-level reporters, media executives, Wall Streeters, tech and Hollywood executives and everyday political fans.

     

    About the job:

     

    We are looking for a Lead Engineer to join our expanding team, taking charge of advancing the technology and development of our SaaS platform. You will report directly to our VP of Product.

     

    As a Lead Engineer, you will be crucial in building, optimizing, and maintaining our applications and infrastructure while ensuring a seamless and engaging user experience. You will work collaboratively with our product team, outside tech firms, design talent and more to implement and build innovative new features and products.

     

    Responsibilities:

     

    Technical Leadership:

     

    • Provide technical guidance and expertise to the wider organization.
    • Recommend architectural approaches while clearly communicating tradeoffs to stakeholders.
    • Ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices, including ideation, development, testing, deployment and documentation.
    • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated track record of technical projects led by you.

     

    Collaboration:

    • Partner and collaborate with product to assist in defining user stories and other technical requirements.
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand business needs to translate them into technical solutions.

     

    Front-end Development:

    • Develop responsive and user-friendly web interfaces.
    • Collaborate with product and design teams to implement visually appealing and intuitive user interfaces.
    • Ensure the website’s compatibility across various browsers and devices.

     

    Back-end Development:

    • Design and manage APIs and databases, ensuring efficient and scalable performance.
    • Optimize codebases, queries and systems to enhance overall application responsiveness.

     

    Security and Performance Optimization:

    • Implement security best practices to safeguard user data and ensure data privacy.
    • Optimize application performance and responsiveness through code and infrastructure improvements.

     

    Quality Assurance and documentation:

    • Ensure good test coverage, including unit, functional and end-to-end tests.
    • Keep technical documentation up to date.

     

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • 5+ years of proven experience as a lead or senior engineer in a growth-stage startup
    • Experience building applications at scale and familiarity with Agile methodologies
    • Experience with front-end and back-end languages, libraries and frameworks, including Python, Django, ElasticSearch, PHP, & Javascript (eg. Vue, React, etc).
    • Experience data modeling in relational and non-relational databases, data integration and data visualization.
    • Familiarity with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines such as Bitbucket or other DevOps related tools.
    • Solid experience with AWS, including services such as Aurora, S3, EC2, etc. Experience with Solr a plus.
    • Experience leading and mentoring other developers.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced startup environment.
    • Passionate about technology, innovation and journalism.
    • Eligible to work in the US.

  • Client Engagement Manager

    About the job:

     

    We are looking for a Manager, Client Engagement to join our advertising and sponsorships team. As an integral member of our growing team, you will manage client relationships, own the sales process, and oversee the execution of sponsorships.

     

    As Manager, Client Engagement, you will be crucial to growing the advertising side of our business. Punchbowl News is looking for someone with strong relationship management skills, high levels of organization, excellent communication, and a collaborative work ethic to join the team.

     

    Responsibilities:

     

    Manage current and prospective client relationships

     

    • Create and own relationships with current and prospective clients through events, meetings, calls, and other touchpoints
    • Partner with senior leadership to build new relationships with clients and industries
    • Strategize and build out new partnerships and initiatives for key clients

     

    Manage full business development life cycle for current and prospective clients

     

    • Lead business development and client engagement for a subset of Punchbowl News’ most valuable clients
    • Pitch the Punchbowl News value proposition to potential advertisers and partners looking to get their brands and messaging in front of DC policymakers and influencers
    • Create proposals and complete RFPs for key clients
    • Create, send, and review contracts for clients

     

    Manage full sponsorship execution for clients

     

    • Oversee execution of paid media and event partnerships
    • Lead client communications and communicate clearly with team members managing operations to ensure deadlines and client expectations are met

     

    Qualifications:

     

    • 5+ years of experience working in sales – business development and/or account management, specifically in digital media or news industry
    • Proven track record of consistently surpassing revenue goals as an individual contributor
    • Expertise in cultivating sales and engaging with existing client relationships
    • Proven ability to develop customer relationships, understand their businesses and develop a shared vision for working with Punchbowl News.
    • Self-starter and willing to work quickly across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
    • Excellent communication skills – to be used over the phone and in person with top executives, including excellent written communication skills.
    • Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working on a small team in a startup environment

    About the job: We are looking for a Business Operations Associate to join our business team to support our advertising and revenue functions. You will manage revenue operations and support advertising operations to help our business team operate efficiently.

     

    As a business operations associate, you will be crucial to growing the business’ overall revenue and overseeing the execution of advertising sponsorships. Punchbowl News is looking for someone with strong organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, good communication skills, and project management capabilities to help all functions of our team succeed.

     

    Responsibilities:

     

    Revenue operations

     

    • Manage and track revenue across different product lines, including owning contracts, billing information, invoicing, payment status, and sponsorship availability
    • Manage revenue projections by product line and keep the team on track to hit revenue goals
    • Own all signed contracts and IOs to make sure they are properly documented and shared with the billing team
    • Own full invoicing process from creation of invoice through approval and payment
    • General billing and payment support across the advertising and subscription business

     

    Advertising & business operations

     

    • Run advertising operations for newsletters, site sponsorships, and custom products, including campaign reporting, advertisement placements, and more
    • Support client relationships across all industries and products, interfacing with clients on a day-to-day basis
    • Manage CRM database and support all teams in maximizing use of CRM tools
    • Support on internal projects across all business functions to assess ROI of efforts and identify areas for growth

     

    Qualifications:

     

    • 3+ years of experience working in business operations, revenue operations, advertising operations or strategy & operations role
    • Proven ability to manage highly sensitive information and communicate complicated information clearly and efficiently
    • Exemplary attention to detail and organizational capabilities
    • Expertise in data analysis and data management
    • Strong Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets skills
    • Experience working with a CRM (HubSpot preferred)
    • Ability to project manage from start to finish with little direction, working on tight project deadlines
    • Self-starter and willing to work quickly across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
    • Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working on a small team in a startup environment
    • Problem solver ready to troubleshoot issues as they arise

We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, dozens of events and more across our growing product suite. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol – and that’s the center of our focus.

    The ideal candidate will want to completely own coverage of the power, people and politics driving Capitol Hill. We’re looking for someone who knows Capitol Hill and wants to break news daily.

     

    Responsibilities:

     

    • This reporter will file several dispatches each week for our flagship newsletters, Punchbowl News AM, Midday and PM. They also will be responsible for breaking news on the beat.
    • Punchbowl News is thinking expansively about new and inventive ways to cover the shifting power dynamics on Capitol Hill in the upcoming Congress, and this reporter will play a leading role in our efforts.
    • This reporter will be willing to participate in and potentially host live newsmaker events and be comfortable representing Punchbowl News on TV and radio.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    • Familiarity with the Capitol, Congress and national politics is a must.
    • At least one year of congressional reporting experience is required. Experience covering the Senate is preferred.
    • Impeccable work ethic is crucial.
    • Experience writing clean, concise copy.
    • A proven track record in breaking news.

  • Technology Reporter

    The Job: Punchbowl News is looking for two reporters to join our growing editorial team and cover the Tech Policy Beat. The best candidates for these positions will have extensive reporting experience, are well sourced across Washington and Silicon Valley and will thrive in a startup-oriented newsroom.

     

    Most importantly, this person should have a proven track record of breaking news. Previous experience covering technology is not a must, but the ability to score scoops is.

     

    Technology companies play an outsized role in Washington. They spend millions of dollars to influence policy and determine who gets elected to Congress. The industry is also under intense scrutiny by lawmakers and regulators – whether that’s antitrust concerns, worries about the effect of social media on children or the future regulation of AI.

     

    There are great stories to be told on this beat and we want aggressive and smart reporters to write them for Punchbowl News.

     

    The Punchbowl News tech reporters will work closely with the entire editorial team to own coverage of the power, people and politics in the technology world. We’re seeking reporters who will focus on tech policy considered by Congress, including issues related to AI, privacy, antitrust, social media, cybersecurity, misinformation and telecom.

     

    Another key part of this job will be reporting on how the technology sector is trying to influence policy in Washington.
