    Job Description

    Financial institutions large and small play an outsized role in the Power, People and Politics of Washington. Hedge fund titans and cryptocurrency billionaires spend tens of millions of dollars on campaigns across the country. They have the ear of the congressional leadership. They spend millions of dollars on lobbying, trying to shape legislation and shape debates.

     

    Punchbowl News is hiring a reporter to cover these figures and chronicle what they are trying to do in Washington.

     

    The ideal candidate would want to completely own the coverage of the power, people and politics in the financial services world. We want to write about what the big players in finance are doing in Washington, their interactions with the leadership and committees, who they are donating to, who they are raising money for, who they are meeting with, what policies they care about and how they are trying to influence D.C. We want someone who wants to own and break news on this incredibly powerful niche.

    Responsibilities

    • File several dispatches each week for our flagship newsletters, Punchbowl News AM, Midday and PM and would be responsible for breaking news on the beat
    • Think expansively about new and inventive ways to cover the Power, People and Politics in the financial services space in Washington
    • Spearhead all efforts around financial services in Washington
    • Host live newsmaker events
    • Appear on television

    Qualifications

    • D.C. and Capitol Hill reporting experience
    • An interest in financial services, Wall Street and the power players in the industry
    • Three or more years of reporting experience preferred
    • Experience writing clean, concise copy
    • A proven track record in breaking news

    Punchbowl News is a news content company led by Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman, John Bresnahan and Rachel Schindler focused on power, people and politics in Washington. We are looking for an editorial web producer to join our Washington-based news team.

     

    Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works. We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, dozens of events and more. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol — and that’s the center of our focus.

     

    Our audience includes members of Congress, high-ranking officials in the Biden administration, lobbyists, top-level reporters, media executives, Wall Streeters, tech and Hollywood executives and everyday political fans.

     

    We are looking for a full-time editorial web producer to help us with our daily newsletters on Punchbowl News AM and Midday. The job includes helping us put together, edit and lay out the newsletter two times each day — around 5:30 a.m and 1 p.m. The job will also include work on our other products: special edition newsletters, marketing communications, podcasts, videos, social media posts and live events.

    Qualifications

    • Familiarity with Congress and national politics is a must. Impeccable work ethic is crucial. The ideal candidate is able to write quickly and copy edit.
    • A familiarity with AP Style and strong attention to detail is essential
    • The job is based in Washington, D.C., but we are open to candidates from everywhere

    Work Experience

    • Two-plus years experience in a newsroom is preferred but not required
    • An understanding of and ability to navigate content management systems is also a plus
