  • managing editor, special projects

    Washington, D.C. / New York, NY / Remote

    Job Description

    We are looking for an entrepreneurial editor to oversee Punchbowl News’s existing custom product features, including The Canvass, our anonymous survey of senior Capitol Hill aides, and The Tally, our take on the 2022 midterms. Additionally, the special projects editor would help develop new products and platforms, working closely with our editorial and business teams. We have had success with short-term projects like The Opener, The Bounceback, and The Workforce. We want to build on those concepts to develop compelling storytelling about key issues impacting the Punchbowl News community.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead all efforts around existing and future special products.
    • Coordinate with the editorial team on products, set up timelines and work closely with contractors to bring projects to life.
    • Craft and run digital and social strategy for new products.
    • Create and iterate on new ways of storytelling

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of work experience
    • Experience managing editorial projects/products from start to finish, working on tight deadlines
    • Self-starter, highly organized
    • Fast-paced and willing to work across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
    • Creative and takes initiative on new ideas

  • Events Producer

    Washington, D.C. / New York, NY / Remote

    Job Description

    Punchbowl News has a growing events business that includes editorial, social, and community-based gatherings. Our wide ranging events are both in-person and virtual and often are created in partnership with a sponsor. Our attendees include members of Congress, high-ranking staffers across the Hill and the Biden administration, lobbyists, top-level reporters, executives, and more.

    We are looking for an Events Producer to help us grow our events business and manage the end-to-end process for all of our events. You will work closely with the founding team in building Punchbowl News.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead all efforts around event planning and execution
    • Strategize and execute on event growth in 2022
    • Write proposals for sponsored events and pitch events to partners
    • Coordinate with event production team on all aspects of event execution
    • Manage all stages of the event pipeline, from inquiry through execution and post-promotion
    • Oversee coordination of key lawmakers, guests, attendees, and sponsors at events
    • Run event execution, from invite management, marketing, promotion, delivery of assets, day-of logistics, and more
    • Own event management system and analyze key events metrics and reporting statistics

    Qualifications

    • 2+ years of work experience
    • Exemplary attention to detail
    • Experience in event planning or project management
    • Ability to project manage start to finish with little direction, working on tight project deadlines
    • Ability to interface with high-ranking members of Congress and the administration, sponsors, and Punchbowl News community members
    • Fast-paced and willing to work across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
    • Creative and takes initiative on new ideas
    • Excited to be one of the earliest members of Punchbowl News

  • Lead Engineer

    Job Description

    Punchbowl News is a news content company founded by Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman, John Bresnahan and Rachel Schindler focused on power, people and politics in Washington. We are looking for a Lead Engineer to join our growing team.

    Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership, and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works. We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, and more. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol—and that’s the center of our focus.

    We are looking for a Lead Engineer to help us grow our media business and become the technical lead for Punchbowl News. You’ll work closely with the founding team in building Punchbowl News.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead all technical efforts for Punchbowl News
    • Manage contractors, freelancers, and agencies to help support and build our technical infrastructure
    • Manage end-to-end development lifecycle for our CMS, payment processor, and all connected applications
    • Ideate, research, experiment and build new improvements and features for Punchbowl News’ digital platform

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of work experience
    • Fluent and experienced in using PHP to build and extend custom themes for WordPress, integrating with third-party services, and customizing the content management system
    • Very experienced in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
    • Can prioritize, break down, and execute technical projects
    • Able to communicate technical topics to non-technical stakeholders
    • Can solve product, design, and technical problems and fill in own gaps in knowledge via research and/or experimentation
    • Comfortable learning on the job
    • Enjoys working in an autonomous environment that moves fast and ships frequently
