Business Operations Manager
Washington, D.C./Baltimore
Punchbowl News is a news content company founded by Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman, John Bresnahan and Rachel Schindler focused on power, people and politics in Washington. We are looking for a Business Operations Manager to join our growing team.
Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works. We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, dozens of events and more across our growing product suite. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol – and that’s the center of our focus.
Our audience includes members of Congress, high-ranking members of the Biden administration, lobbyists, top-level reporters, media executives, Wall Streeters, tech and Hollywood executives and everyday political fans.
We are looking for a Business Operations Manager to join our business team to support our advertising and sponsorships team. The job includes running advertising operations for our sponsorships, supporting client relationships and management, managing our CRM efforts and supporting on internal projects where needed. Punchbowl News is looking for someone with strong relationship management, organization, and teamwork skills to grow our company.
Responsibilities:
- Run advertising operations for newsletters, site sponsorships, and custom products, including campaign reporting, advertisement placements, and more.
- Support client relationships across all industries and products, interfacing with clients on a day-to-day basis
- Lead client intake and working on client partnership proposals
- Manage CRM database and support all teams in maximizing use of CRM tools
- Support on internal projects across all business functions to assess ROI of efforts and identify areas for growth
Qualifications:
- 2-3 years of experience working in client relations or advertising
- Strong writing and analytical skills
- Exemplary attention to detail and communication skills
- Ability to project manage from start to finish with little direction, working on tight project deadlines
- Self-starter and willing to work quickly across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working on a small team in a startup environment

Director of Client Engagement

Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works. We are looking for a Director of Client Engagement to help us grow the business of Punchbowl News. You will work closely with the founding team in building Punchbowl News.
Responsibilities:
- Lead business development and client engagement for a subset of Punchbowl News’ most valuable clients
- Own vertical/industry relationships with companies that advertise and communicate in Washington
- Strategize and build out new partnerships and initiatives for key clients
- Partner with the CEO and business team to build new relationships with clients and industries
- Serve as SME on the intersection of industries and Washington including but limited to: financial services, health care, energy and technology.
- Effectively manage relationships with C-suite at Fortune 100 companies, including communication, meetings, events and more.
Qualifications:
- 7-10+ years experience working in sales – business development and/or account management, specifically in digital media or news industry
- Expertise in cultivating outbound sales and engaging with existing client relationships
- Proven ability to develop customer relationships, understand their businesses and develop a shared vision for working with Punchbowl News.
- Self-starter and willing to work quickly across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working on a small team in a startup environment
- Excellent communication skills – to be used over the phone and in-person with top executives, including excellent written communication skills.

Growth Marketer

Punchbowl News’ primary focus is breaking news about power, the nation’s political leadership and explaining to our audience of political junkies how Washington works. We produce (at least) three newsletters each day, a daily podcast, dozens of events and more across our growing product suite. Punchbowl News’ theory is that power in Washington emanates from the Capitol – and that’s the center of our focus.

We are looking for a Growth Marketer to help us grow our audience and offerings for Punchbowl News. You will work closely with the founding team in building Punchbowl News.
Responsibilities:
- Lead growth (acquisition and engagement) for Punchbowl News’ product suite – including but not limited to Punchbowl News’ flagship product – Punchbowl News AM
- Deploy an annual paid marketing budget across Facebook, Instagram, Google Search, LinkedIn, and more
- Build top-of-funnel acquisition for Punchbowl News, driving from off-platform to on-platform to newsletter readers
- Lead new marketing strategies to expand our reach and engage and convert readers.
- Optimize ROI through automation of efforts
- Strategize and lead new growth-driving efforts and initiatives
Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of experience in growth marketing, audience development, and/or digital media
- Experience leading growth marketing, email marketing and SEO
- Expertise in managing paid media budgets focusing on converting and gaining email subscribers
- Strong data data analysis skills, including comfortability working across multiple data sources
- Ability to project manage from start to finish with little direction, working on tight project deadlines
- Self-starter and willing to work quickly across multiple projects/initiatives at a time
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working on a small team in a startup environment
