Introduction

Global energy demand is rising as emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and the increased electrification of transportation modes require more power.

AI in particular consumes so much energy as data centers that power the technology crop up and require more power, water and land. Experts project AI will be the biggest energy demand driver for years.

At the same time, the drive for more energy production poses new challenges for global decarbonization efforts. All the while, lawmakers and the industry grapple with a complicated infrastructure and energy permitting process that all agree is ripe for an overhaul.

This four-part series will examine the key factors driving the energy sector into the future and how policymakers and the private sector are approaching the challenges of 21st-century power generation.

In this series, we’ll look into:

  • The State of Play: An overview of the state of the energy sector and what’s in store for the future
  • The Regulatory Landscape: How regulators and lawmakers across the U.S. are trying to steer the energy sector and balance the competing factors driving it into the future
  • A Leading Voice: A key lawmaker will provide useful insight into how Congress is approaching the energy industry
  • The Players: The leading people and institutions shaping the direction of the energy industry

We’ll also have a podcast to accompany each issue, so please tune in for the most recent episode here.
