⚡Punchbowl News Special Edition: The government is funded until Feburary
BY JOHN BRESNAHAN, ANNA PALMER AND JAKE SHERMAN Congress has officially averted a government shutdown. The Senate passed a stopgap bill Thursday to keep the federal agencies open until Feb. 18. The vote was 69-28. The House had earlier approved the measure by 221-212 margin, with only GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois crossing the aisle to vote with Democrats. The legislation will now go on to President Joe Biden The Senate also rejected an effort spearheaded by GOP Sens. Roger Marshall (Kan.) and Mike Lee (Utah) to bar vaccine mandates for private businesses. That vote was 48-50. Senate Democrats were helped by two Republican absences. Sens. John Thune (S.D.) and Bill Hagerty (Tenn.) missed the Thursday evening vote. The next order of business for Congress is to lift the debt limit by Dec. 15. |
