Top Senate Republicans are rejecting Democrats’ calls to strip the Department of Homeland Security measure from a six-bill FY2026 funding package.
But the two sides are having preliminary discussions as more GOP senators publicly call out the Trump administration after federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti Saturday in Minneapolis. The government funding deadline is Friday.
Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), who chairs the DHS appropriations subcommittee, met for an hour Monday with Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine). The pair participated in a brief Senate session to take the first procedural steps on the funding bill.
