White House leans hard into Abrego Garcia dispute

President Donald Trump and his aides are never subtle about messaging or where they stand in a fight. That couldn’t be clearer in the political and legal struggle over Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the undocumented Salvadoran immigrant improperly deported from Maryland to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador.

Led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Democrats have turned Abrego Garcia into a cause célèbre, a victim of the Trump administration’s inhumane and illegal moves on immigration. They note that Abrego Garcia — who is married to a U.S. citizen — was under a judicial order that barred his removal from the country.
