A new day for the credit card wars

The two major U.S. payment companies agreed to a landmark settlement today that could scramble the fight over swipe fees in Washington.

Visa and Mastercard agreed this morning to settle a class-action antitrust lawsuit from merchants by cutting back on transaction fees, granting retailers more flexibility to pass charges along to consumers and requiring negotiations on fees for smaller sellers.
