Lawmakers are trying to make sense of the status of Iran’s nuclear weapons program following President Donald Trump’s declaration that Tehran is “starting it all over” during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.
In the aftermath, some are working to reconcile what they see as two conflicting messages from Trump. During his speech, Trump asserted that American airstrikes last June “obliterated” Iran’s program while also declaring that Iran is developing nuclear-enabled missiles that could soon reach the United States.
“[Trump] can’t maintain that his previous strikes eliminated all of Iran’s activity and now we need more strikes to eliminate activity,” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the co-author of an Iran war powers resolution, said Wednesday. “That’s inconsistent.”
