House Republican defense hawks on Thursday beat back Democratic efforts to shrink military spending, cut funding for a “Trump-class” battleship and protest the Iran war.
The votes, which largely broke along party lines, occurred during the first stretch of debate on the House Armed Services Committee’s $1.14 trillion defense policy bill, a markup that’s expected to extend well into the night.
The committee defeated an amendment 25-31 from Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) to shrink the topline of the FY2027 NDAA by $150 billion. Two Democrats — Reps. Jared Golden (Maine) and Don Davis (N.C.) — broke with their party to oppose the push.
