Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth maintained Tuesday that the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran is still in place — even as the two sides trade fire over the Strait of Hormuz.

Hegseth also sought to differentiate the newly begun U.S. effort to open up the strait from the broader, monthslong military campaign against Iran, which the Trump administration considers “terminated.”

“No, the ceasefire is not over,” Hegseth told reporters from the Pentagon. “Ultimately, this is a separate and distinct project, and we expected there would be some churn at the beginning, which happened.”
