Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.) broke his 24-day silence on the criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell Wednesday, telling Fox Business that he did “not believe that [Powell] committed a crime” while testifying before the panel last summer.
Several senators on Scott’s committee – many of whom have been criticizing the Trump DOJ’s decision to open a criminal probe into Powell since Jan. 11 – are glad to have Scott on board, albeit belatedly.
“Chairman Scott seems to be saying that the Trump administration’s charges against Chair Powell are pretextual,” Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in an interview. “And that means, they ought to be dropped.”
