HFAC staffer mulls campaign against Riley

Haris Alic, the top Republican communications staffer for the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is considering a run against Rep. Josh Riley (D-N.Y.).

Alic has served as a spokesperson for Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio) and Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Before working in political communications, Alic was a reporter for several conservative outlets, including the Washington Times, Fox News and Breitbart News.

Here’s Alic on a potential run:

Alic, 31, said he left the district “as a young man” and “had to move six hours away just to find work — a choice too many New Yorkers still face.”

Republicans don’t have a top contender in the race yet, and so far, no candidates have filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Riley flipped the seat, held by former GOP Rep. Marc Molinaro, last year in one of the most hotly contested races of the cycle.

The freshman lawmaker represents the central Hudson Valley and part of the Catskills. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won the district by 2 points in 2024. Riley had $1.2 million in the bank at the end of June.
