The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee last week approved a highway and infrastructure bill that would create a new revenue stream for the ever-depleting Highway Trust Fund for the first time in decades.
It’s not even close to enough. And it’s unlikely to become law anyway.
The House panel, in a bipartisan vote, advanced the transportation package that included a $130 registration annual fee for electric vehicles and $35 for hybrids. Starting in 2029, the fees would increase by $5 every other year until the EV fee hits $150 and the hybrid fee hits $50. States face a big penalty if they don’t comply.
