News: House Majority PAC is out with a new memo arguing that rising gas prices should “terrify every vulnerable House Republican.”
Before the Iran war, House Democrats were already planning on making the 2026 midterms about affordability. Now that President Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East is causing oil prices to spike, Democrats are doubling down.
“In 2024, Republicans won because voters trusted them on the economy,” the HMP memo says. “But after 14 months of tariff price hikes, Medicaid cuts, ACA cuts, and an administration focused on everything but the economy, that trust is gone — and now comes skyrocketing gas prices.”
The memo lists a range of politically at-risk House Republicans who previously issued statements attacking Democrats for high gas prices under the Biden administration. HMP then slams the lawmakers for going silent amid the current spike.
During last week’s House GOP retreat, Republicans largely said they weren’t concerned about the Iran war affecting the economy.
“We’re having a blip in oil prices because of what’s going on in Iran right now, but that’s temporary,” NRCC Chair Richard Hudson told us. “Overall, prices are going down and the economy is surging.”
