The renovation of the Rayburn House Office Building may take 20 years and could cost nearly $9 billion, which would make it the largest in the Architect of the Capitol’s history.
Architect of the Capitol Thomas Austin faced questions from House appropriators Wednesday on the potential cost of the renovation and what temporary accommodations would be needed for lawmakers and staff. Austin said a full renovation is necessary to address the building’s malfunctions, fire hazards, lead and asbestos.
