Sherman takes open HFAC subcommittee gavel

News: Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) is taking over for Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) as the top Democrat on a key House Foreign Affairs subcommittee.

Cherfilus-McCormick stepped down as the ranking Democrat on the Middle East and North Africa subcommittee on HFAC after she was indicted on charges that she stole $5 million in disaster relief funds.

Sherman is the second-ranking lawmaker on the panel so, under Democratic Caucus rules, he gets the post. Democratic leadership could stop that, but they aren’t showing much interest in doing so.
