A top Food and Drug Administration official briefed a group of Senate HELP Committee members and staff Wednesday afternoon on the goals for a food safety and nutrition program.
FDA deputy commissioner for human foods Kyle Diamantas discussed the agency’s goal to reduce artificial dyes in foods and how to define ultra-processed foods. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and MAHA advocates have made these issues top priorities.
Senate HELP Chair Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said after the briefing that Congress needs to do more to rein in ultra-processed foods. Cassidy is in a competitive primary. He has notably clashed with Kennedy on vaccines, but this is an area where the two may agree.
