Senate scrambles on border ahead of shutdown

Key Senate Republicans told us they’re trying to craft an amendment to the proposed stopgap funding bill that would boost funding for the U.S.-Mexico border and institute new migrant policies. These talks may not finish until tomorrow or Saturday, these GOP senators warned.
But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, with a government shutdown looming at midnight Saturday, moved to force a key procedural vote on a bipartisan proposal that would keep federal agencies open until mid-November. This vote would take place early Saturday. If the Senate fails to get 60 votes then, it would seal a shutdown. And the House would still need to weigh in on this proposal.
