Maine Democratic Gov. Janet Mills on Thursday dropped out of the state’s Senate primary, paving the way for progressive outsider Graham Platner to take on Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in November.
Mills’ departure is a stunning admission that the campaign of the two-term sitting governor failed to gain traction against a first-time political candidate who had to alter a Nazi Totenkopf tattoo shortly after entering the race.
“I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,” Mills said in a statement.
