Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) ouster sparked wildly different responses from the Senate’s party leaders today.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer argued that it should be a lesson to future GOP speakers that catering to the extreme elements of the party is a mistake. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, praised McCarthy and suggested that the California Republican sacrificed his own job for the good of the country.
