President Donald Trump’s decision on Tuesday to endorse Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in next week’s runoff election is roiling the Senate Republican Conference.
The surprise move from Trump came after months of uncertainty and thwarted an aggressive effort by Senate Majority Leader John Thune to convince the president to back Cornyn.
In a Truth Social post, Trump hailed Paxton as a MAGA warrior. Trump also said Cornyn was “not supportive of me when times were tough” — referencing Cornyn’s initial hesitance to embrace Trump’s political comeback after losing the 2020 election.
