Senior Republicans are dug in – regardless of how long the conflict in Iran lasts, President Donald Trump doesn’t need any authorization from Congress to conduct the campaign.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune responded bluntly, “No,” when asked whether Trump would need to get lawmakers’ blessing to continue the attacks on Iran.
“The president has the authority that he needs to conduct the activities and the operations that are currently underway there,” Thune added. Thune noted that Congress retains the “power of the purse,” but he said the administration had done a good job of keeping lawmakers “in the loop.”
