News: The Senate on Thursday unanimously passed a bipartisan bill to limit collection of teens’ data online. The move came just as the House Energy and Commerce Committee is conducting a markup of kids digital bills that includes a GOP-written version of the measure.
The Senate cleared the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) following a request from the bill’s sponsors, Sens. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.). Markey said House Republicans’ version of the bill “undermines strong bipartisan compromise” in the Senate.
In the House. Democrats at the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s markup of bills designed to protect kids online said the Republicans’ package would leave young consumers worse off and get in the way of efforts to hold Big Tech accountable.
