Republican advocates of overriding state rules on artificial intelligence are gearing up for battle again. They may have some Democratic partners this time, depending on their approach.

At least two congressional committees with a stake in tech policy are working on how much to preempt state laws on AI, an issue that has split Republicans in recent months. But in this latest effort, the focus is on preventing states from overseeing distinct areas of AI work rather than the industry more broadly.
