OpenAI’s Altman says DeepSeek is ‘nothing we don’t have’

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told an audience of top policy officials that the Chinese artificial intelligence model DeepSeek exists at a “capability level that we had quite some time ago.”

Altman was back in Washington today, days after announcing the $500 billion Stargate project for AI infrastructure at the White House. In the intervening time, Wall Street and many in Congress have reeled over the possibility that DeepSeek’s advanced model was developed for far cheaper than U.S. systems.
