TikTok deal will be tied up in China trade talks, says Perplexity official

A corporate suitor for TikTok sees a potential deal to acquire the successful Chinese-owned app as part of the outcome of trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

“I think the real driver of the timeline is going to be tariffs on China, retaliation,” Dmitry Shevelenko, chief business officer of Perplexity, an AI company that disclosed its bid earlier this month, told Punchbowl News.

The potential timeline raises the possibility that ownership of the app isn’t resolved until after President Donald Trump’s 75-day pause on enforcement of a law that’s designed to force TikTok out of Chinese hands.
