Florida GOP Rep. Vern Buchanan, a wealthy car dealer who is vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, will retire at the end of this Congress.
Buchanan, 74, was first elected in 2006 to a conservative district on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Buchanan routinely won the seat by large margins and President Donald Trump won the seat under its current lines by 15 points in 2024.
Florida is about to redraw its congressional maps. But James Buchanan, Vern’s son, is seen as a possible replacement. Buchanan is in the Florida House, where he represents Sarasota County.
