House and Senate Republican tax writers are skeptical that suspending the federal gas tax will make much of a difference in Americans’ pocketbooks.
President Donald Trump threw out the idea of a gas tax holiday early last week to help Americans manage the rising cost of living — Republicans’ biggest liability this election cycle. But a pause on the 18.4-cent-a-gallon federal gas tax wouldn’t be a huge price-cutter for taxpayers and it would cost billions in lost revenue for the Highway Trust Fund.
