Reconciliation and the fight over FY2025 government funding have gotten most of the attention on Capitol Hill in recent weeks. And rightly so. The fate of the 2017 Trump cuts and the possibility of a government shutdown in mid-March are and were huge stories that will affect all Americans.

But don’t sleep on the FY2026 budget and what it means for a potential government shutdown this fall, which we always saw as much more likely to happen than a March shutdown.
