El-Sayed joins growing Michigan Democratic Senate field

Abdul El-Sayed, a former health official and Michigan gubernatorial hopeful, is running for Senate in Michigan. El-Sayed picked up a vital endorsement from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday, cementing the 40-year-old as the progressive candidate in the Democratic primary.

El-Sayed is seeking to advance to the general election in the race to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.). Previously, El-Sayed lost by 22 points to now-Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
