A confirmation hearing Thursday for President Donald Trump’s nominee to oversee military operations in Central and South America quickly turned into a proxy fight over the administration’s ongoing actions in Venezuela.
Democratic senators used the hearing to air concerns about the next steps in Venezuela and the future scope of American military involvement in the country following the stunning capture of Nicolás Maduro.
“The aftermath of this operation is still very uncertain and could have enormous impacts on the region and the United States,” said Sen. Jack Reed (R.I.), the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
