A bipartisan group of lawmakers used a weekend trek to Greenland to attempt to reassure the country’s citizens that President Donald Trump’s threats to take over the remote territory did not represent broader U.S. sentiment.
“In just a few sentences and words, trust that has been built since World War II has been eroded and degraded. We have to work to restore that trust,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said at a Monday news conference. “Yes, our president may make certain statements, but we also, as Congress, have a role.”
That role could include the appropriations process, “authorizing or not authorizing spending,” and cultural exchanges, Murkowski said.
