Direct File wrapped: The stats on year one

The Treasury Department and IRS just finished their first test run of a free, online tax filing system known as “Direct File,” and they’re out with some stats today.

The pilot ran in 12 states, where 140,803 people filed their taxes using Direct File this spring at a cost of about $13 million for tech and operations, the IRS and Treasury announced. The tool saved taxpayers $5.6 million in tax preparation fees on federal tax returns, according to their estimate.
