IRS plans for business as usual

The IRS will remain open if the government shuts down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday — at least for now.

The agency will keep all of its employees working using funds from the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, according to a shutdown plan released this afternoon. That law created a big pot of long-term money for the IRS outside of the annual government funding process, though it’s been significantly drained since 2022.
