Washington got a bit of good news today on Social Security and Medicare’s dwindling finances – a little more breathing room. But the financial outlook for the programs remains grim.

The combined Social Security trust funds are now expected to face a shortfall beginning in 2035, a year later than the previous estimate. Medicare’s Hospital Insurance Trust Fund would run too low to pay full benefits starting in 2036, which is five years later than the last projection. That’s according to new trustees reports out today.
