2024 is off to the races when it comes to tax, with a potential bipartisan deal on the child tax credit and business tax extensions on the horizon.

This year will be crucial for policy, setting the stage for a massive tax showdown near the end of 2025 as a big chunk of Republicans’ 2017 tax code overhaul expires.

Many Republicans want a shot to lock in key planks of their 2017 law passed under former President Donald Trump.

When we asked Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) what to watch this year, he pointed to “a lot of work to try to set up how we will approach the expirations that are happening in 2025.”
