Timeline for filling Gaetz seat complicates House GOP situation

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued a timeline for filling former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-Fla.) seat, and it’s longer than both sides had privately projected.

According to the Florida Department of State, which oversees elections in the Sunshine State, it will take 131 days from today to fill Gaetz’s seat — more than four months. Gaetz said today that he has no intention of serving in the 119th Congress. Florida officials started their clock with an executive order by DeSantis today.
