Senior appropriator Rep. Mark Amodei’s (R-Nev.) retirement announcement on Friday guarantees that a new Republican will ascend to a coveted top subcommittee spot on the House Appropriations Committee.
Amodei, the Homeland Security appropriations cardinal, was the first senior appropriator to announce he won’t run for reelection. More top subcommittee spots may open next year as a handful of senior appropriators face tough races, like Reps. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.). But Amodei’s retirement officially sets off the shuffle.
Whether Amodei’s replacement will be chair of the subcommittee or its ranking member will depend on which party controls the chamber following this year’s midterm elections.
