Grassley says Meta may have targeted ads based on users’ emotional state

Exclusive: Meta may have targeted ads at users based on their emotional state despite the company saying it does not engage in this practice, according to Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

In a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Grassley cites text messages between senior officials at Facebook that he says show the company may have used “sentiment” detection to decide what ads should be shown to individuals. Critics contend this type of advertising is manipulative and preys on people’s moods.
