Senate Republicans privately debate a clean CR

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is sticking with the bipartisan deal he cut with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on a short-term funding bill that includes billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine and disaster relief.

But there’s a sharp internal debate among Senate Republicans over whether they should back a clean CR instead as a way to boost Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans. McCarthy doesn’t support including Ukraine aid in any continuing resolution to keep federal agencies open beyond Sept. 30.
