President Donald Trump’s controversial pick to serve as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia is facing backlash from Senate Republicans, raising fresh doubts about his confirmation prospects.
Ed Martin, who’s been serving as the acting federal prosecutor for D.C., has come under fire for his past associations with — and comments about — the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Democrats have criticized Martin’s tenure as acting U.S. attorney, arguing he’s politicizing the job and using the role to serve Trump’s interests.
On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee delayed a vote on whether to hold a hearing on Martin’s nomination. It’s very uncommon for a U.S. attorney nominee to get a Judiciary Committee hearing, but Democrats are pushing for one.
