Tech: AI safety PAC backs Wiener in SF

Scoop. The top pro-safety AI political group is going “big” to support California State Sen. Scott Wiener in the race to replace former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to a source familiar with the plans.

Public First Action, a group spearheaded by former Rep. Brad Carson (D-Okla.) and supported by Anthropic, plans to put its campaign muscle behind Wiener in his three-way Democratic primary contest to represent San Francisco.

Wiener is close to Anthropic leadership and has long been a target of some in the AI industry, like David Sacks and venture capital firm a16z, for his support for safety-first AI.
