President Donald Trump’s decision to send an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland drew sighs of relief from Republicans, even as some still worry about the damage to rattled European allies.
Trump’s decision late Thursday in a Truth Social post gave some Republicans whiplash, coming on the heels of the United States delaying the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland and drawing down 5,000 troops from Germany.
“It was the right decision, absolutely,” said Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) on Friday of the additional troops. “As we still have the threat coming from Russia, I think it’s just smart, and it’s good to keep our troops at a high readiness level.”
