Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, is in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just days before Trump’s deadline for imposing new sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine. While Russian officials described the talks as “constructive,” the White House hasn’t signaled any breakthrough at this point.
Trump has set an Aug. 8 deadline for Russia to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine or he will slap secondary sanctions on countries that buy Russian oil, chiefly India and China. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said, and the two agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire.
